1. Aims and Content Criteria of the Document and Publication Server Qucosa

Qucosa has been established for the purpose of electronic publishing, reference and long-term archiving of scholarly publications. This service is offered by the academic libraries of the Saxon State. It is part of the international  Open Access movement.

The tenant area of the SLUB is open to any kind of scientific document of any provenance. We advise members of the Saxon universities who maintain an independent Qucosa tenant to register their documents at their institutional tenant. The SLUB tenant mainly focuses on documents from or about Saxony.

The following documents can be submitted electronically:

  • Doctoral and postdoctoral theses
  • Degree examination papers (bachelor, master, diploma, and magister works) and seminar papers
  • Research papers
  • Proceedings and congress contributions (InProceedings)
  • Preprints
  • Books and parts of books (InBuch)
  • Periodicals, journals, and journal articles
  • Lectures and presentations
  • Compositions
  • Other publications

The document and publication server Qucosa offers a worldwide availability of full texts and a long-term storage of your publication.

Citability is ensured due to a persistent  WWW address (persistent identifier urn:nbn).

By using structured metadata, the electronic documents will be bibliographically described and will be made available through national and international library catalogues, search engines, and other research tools.

Please use the link Search for searching on Qucosa.

As an Open Archive Initiative (OAI) registered data provider, this server provides the opportunity for research and structuring the metadata by providers throughout the world.

Qucosa does not restrict itself to first publications. Most publishing houses (incl. Blackwell, Elsevier, Kluwer, Springer, Wiley) now allow their authors parallel open-access publishing on document servers. In accordance with the recommendations of the Science Council, authors can also publish their documents – taking account of any blocking period – on a document server while respecting the copyright. The granted rights can be determined via the SHERPA/RoMEO-List.

Qucosa is also available for publications within the framework of international and European funding programmes.

By signing the Deposit license – Publishing agreement of consent for e-publishing on Qucosa, authors and publishers grant the SLUB Dresden, which is the provider of the document and publication server Qucosa, all necessary rights to archive the document and deposit a copy on the freely accessable academic document and publication server Qucosa. The responsibility for ensuring the compliance with copyrights as well as exploitation rights of a third-party- still rests with the author or publisher of the electronic document.

The authors or editors are responsible for the content of the documents. Qucosa assumes no liability.

The registration of a document with Qucosa does not entail the right of its online provision. The SLUB reserves the right not to activate a registered document in exceptional cases. Of course, the author will be informed. There is no recourse to legal action.

Publications on Qucosa are available in the long run. There is a minimum availability of 5 years guaranteed for all documents. The storage currently takes place threefold at two locations. In the future, every document is to be stored in the SLUBArchive. In order to do so, it is of essential necessity to comply with the Technical Standards for Publishing Digital Documents.

2. The electronic document

In the sense as laid down in the guidelines mentioned above, the term »electronic document« refers to a document that is based on texts and graphics and is stored in digital form. Not only traditional texts can be published but also multimedia documents consisting of audio, images, film, computer animation, etc.

A document to be published via Qucosa shall fulfil the following conditions:

  1. It is intended for public dissemination.
  2. If updates are necessary for the document in question, the modified document is stored as the new version. Previously published documents are not deleted. Public access to documents can be blocked for legal reasons (see FAQs).
  3. The document corresponds to the publishing parameters specified by Qucosa.

3. Indexing on Qucosa

All documents are subject indexed by the libraries and the authors themselves and can be found via this indexing. The following subject indexing instruments are used or offered in this process:

The electronic documents are provided with individual and permanent URNs, which allow direct access to the documents.

The documents are, amongst other things, referenced

International standards, such as the guidelines of the Open Archives Initiative (OAI), are used and further developed for the indexing, storing and archiving of electronic documents.
